Method
- Place bread on a cutting board. Using a bread knife, make diagonal cuts across the top surface of the bread about 1 inch apart, cutting deep but leaving the bottom crust intact. Rotate 90 degrees and make perpendicular cuts to create a crosshatch of 1-inch squares across the top.
- Place bread on a sheet of foil large enough to wrap it on a sheet pan.
- Fry bacon until crisp, remove. Add 1 tbsp butter to same pan and saute mushrooms until brown. Set aside.
- Melt remaining butter with garlic over medium-low heat. Once sizzling, remove from heat and let sit 10 minutes to infuse.
- Using a pastry brush or spoon, work garlic butter between all the cuts. Pour any remaining butter over the top.
- Spoon mushrooms and crumbled bacon evenly into the cuts. Do the same with the shredded cheese, pushing it down into each square.
- Loosely wrap in foil and bake at 375°F for 20 minutes. Open foil and bake 10 more minutes until golden brown and cheese is bubbling. Pull apart and serve immediately.
